Dear Howard University Community,
Although the celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday varies across this nation, we can agree that the name alone reminds us to recognize our blessings, and joyfully give back to others—being mindful that no matter our circumstances, we each have something of which we can be thankful.
While we navigate through the challenges on our campus, in our nation, and abroad, I am indeed thankful for a University community that continues to support one another, and those in need. I am incredibly grateful for our dedicated, students, faculty, staff, alumni, supporters, and the tireless contributions you make to our institution. It is through your work and dedication that we continue to sustain the University’s mission and uphold our commitment to Excellence in Truth and Service.
The holiday season always reminds me of the eloquent words of the acclaimed activist, theologian, and former Dean of the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel, Howard Thurman, who said, “whatever may be the tensions and the stresses of a particular day, there is always lurking close at hand the trailing beauty of forgotten joy or unremembered peace.”
The Thanksgiving holiday is a time to pause, reflect, and appreciate the good in our community, our nation, and the world; while recognizing that we have a great distance to travel to overcome our challenges. There remains hope in our journey.
In recognition of the Nov. 23 Thanksgiving holiday, the University will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 22 at Noon, and will reopen on Monday, Nov. 27.
Employees who have been deemed essential are expected to report to work on Wednesday, Nov. 22 and may be required to do so on Nov. 23 or 24 as well. Essential services include those provided by ETS, WHUR-FM, WHUT-TV, Physical Facilities Management, Public Safety, and Howard University Hospital. Please refer to the Office of Human Resources for additional details.
Wishing you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!
Excellence in Truth and Service,
Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA
