Transfer of Credit & Articulation Agreements
Howard University accepts academic courses from regionally accredited colleges and universities as transfer credits. Upon receipt of a student’s official transcript(s)/examination results (and transfer course petition form for current students transferring college credits), official transfer credits will be evaluated and processed by Howard University's Transfer Services team. For more information on our credit hour assignment policy and articulation agreements, please also see the below PDF links.
Prospective undergraduate transfer students, as well as first year applicants who have taken dual enrollment courses, who would like to request a preliminary evaluation to determine eligible transfer credits are encouraged to contact the Office of Admission at firstname.lastname@example.org. All email requests should include a legible PDF copy of your unofficial college transcript. Please note, only general education courses are evaluated as part of the preliminary evaluation. We generally encourage students who take courses outside of Howard to take non-major coursework, as these courses are most likely to be transferable. Moreover, where the course titles and course descriptions are similar, these courses are most likely to be transferable. You may find our major schemes via each program's website or in the university's undergraduate course catalog.
Graduate College Credits
Howard University will accept graduate transfer credits from a regionally accredited postsecondary institution. Each school/college has specific eligibility criteria and stipulations for transfer credits. Please see the PDF link below for further details.
Undergraduate College Credits
Howard University will accept credits from a regionally accredited postsecondary institution. Students must submit their official college transcript via mail (not preferred) or through an e-transcript system (e.g. Parchment, or the National Student Clearinghouse. If asked for the recipient’s email address, please provide email@example.com -- highly preferred) to be officially considered for transfer credits. Note, student email submissions directly to the university are NOT accepted. Current Howard University students seeking to take classes at another college/university must also ensure an approved Transfer Course Petition Form is on file to be eligible to receive transfer credits. Please consult with your academic advisor to learn more about the petition process.
Transfer courses must be of comparable content, academic level, and scope to the curricular offerings at Howard University
Credit hour(s) assignment to transfer courses will be semester credit hours. If the originating institution is other than the semester system, the appropriate conversion of credit hour (s) will take place by the Office of Enrollment Management.
Students must have earned a grade of “C” or higher in academic courses in order for the courses to be transferred to Howard University.
For transfer course credits that are discipline specific, the Office of the Registrar will request a review and assignment of the transfer credits by the specific discipline.
A maximum of 60 credit hours from an accredited institution can be transferred. (Note: Howard University requires that the last 30 credit hours for an undergraduate degree be taken at Howard University)
Credit hours are transferable to Howard University, not grades. Therefore, grades for academic courses transferred will not be included in the overall GPA of a student
All transcripts from international institutions (except pre-approved study abroad courses) must be evaluated by a current NACES member, and must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar via the respective agency.
