A message From Stacey J. Mobley, Esq.
Chairman, Howard University Board of Trustees

Dear Howard University Alumni,

An institution is made stronger by the active presence and insight of its alumni. Toward that end, President Wayne A. I. Frederick has cited alumni outreach and enhanced engagement as important initiatives of his administration. Your strong participation in the 2017 alumni trustee election process is essential to the continuous advancement of the University. The alumni trustee owes a fiduciary responsibility first and foremost to the University as a whole. The Board, however, welcomes the perspective of the alumni.

To elicit the broadest possible participation, alumni trustee elections have been conducted online since 2010. The Office of the Secretary shall declare the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes in the process as the "Alumni Nominees" provided that, the combined votes of the two candidates represent at least 30 percent of all votes cast by alumni. If the candidates fail to achieve a 30 percent plurality, there shall be a run-off process. The run-off process shall be between the three candidates receiving the highest number of votes. The candidate nominees receiving the two highest numbers of votes with at least a combined 30 percent plurality shall be referred by the Secretary to the Governance Committee for its consideration and recommendation to the Board. The referral shall include a statement of eligibility regarding the nominees and the names for all the candidates who participated in the process. Except under extraordinary circumstances, the Board will give full consideration and priority to the nominee receiving the highest number of votes.

Notwithstanding this online process, the number of actual voters remains extremely low, with less than 10 percent of all eligible alumni voting in last year’s alumni trustee election. This low rate of participation is of considerable concern to me and all of the members of the Board of Trustees as we aggressively seek strategies to engage alumni in the life of this great institution.

President Frederick and I are both alumni ourselves, and we strongly encourage you to participate fully in the process by voting in the election. Your voice is important and must be heard. All earned degree holders from Howard University are eligible to vote.

In preparation for the opening of the election in April 12, 2017, I urge you to visit the University Web site at www.howard.edu/vote to learn more about how you can participate in this year's election. Please contact the Department of Alumni Relations at 202-806-5857 with any questions on the voting process.

Thank you for your steadfast support of Howard University. I look forward to a record number of participants in this year's alumni election!
