Dear Howard University Community,

I write to share my thoughts on a matter that is extremely relevant, sensitive, and serious. Sexual assault and other forms of interpersonal violence are critical issues that will not be tolerated on our campus. It is a violation of the law and University policy. But more importantly, it is a breach that can diminish one’s humanity. 

Statement Re Unrest in Charlottesville, VA

As many of you know, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency today after unrest in Charlottesville, Va. This morning, counter-protesters gathered in Emancipation Park in anticipation of a Unite the Right rally, a gathering of White nationalist groups who are promoting White Supremacy. The aim of the rally was to protest the removal of a statue honoring Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

Howard Manor

Many of you may have read The Washington Post article dated June 24, 2017, which commented on the progress of the relocation and modernization efforts at the Howard Manor. Fontaine Kalisa

Fontaine Kalisa has over three years of experience in community works. He currently works as the Education Manager at Coburwas International Youth Organization to Transform Africa (CIYOTA) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo under the Youth Department. CIYOTA is a non-profit organization that seeks to unite, develop and transform African communities by empowering young people through education, socially responsible leadership, entrepreneurship, and active non-violence.

Yuvenalis Ogendi

Yuvenalis Ogendi has over three years' experience in legal and policy research. Currently, Yuvenalis is pursuing a post-graduate diploma in Law for admission to the Bar and sits on the Taskforce on Access for Persons Living with a Disability, aimed at creating a universal design policy in higher education institutions. He is also actively examining whether the legal and institutional policy frameworks in Kenya are sufficient and practical enough to get the country past the resource curse from a human rights-based approach.

Winnie Griffin Zakayo

Winnie Zakayo has over two years of experience in electrical engineering with an emphasis on design installation for public and private institutions. Currently, Winnie is an Engineer trainee at a private engineering and environmental management consultancy firm called FBNE Limited. Here, she focuses on preparation of proposals, designs and specifications, administration of tender documentations, and negotiations and managing of contracts in her respective field.

Sheila Awuor

Sheila Achieng Awuor has over 3 years of experience in volunteering, specifically focusing on transformational leadership. Sheila is a co-founder and a key implementer for Jabulani Youths For Transformation, where she focuses on children and youth empowerment using several practical and daily encounters to improve the current and future lives of those she works with. Sheila holds a bachelor's degree in Food Science and Technology from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya.

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela has over four years of experience as a volunteer English teacher through International Christian Ministries. He enables learners to effectively communicate in English and have a global mindset. Currently, Nelson is Founder and Representative of Hidden Talent English Club's Agents of Change, a platform that helps students improve their English and use English as a tool to achieve their goals by discovering their dreams, talents, and potential. Students are then encouraged to become agents of change to the community they are staying in.

Musawakhe Khumalo

Musawakhe Khumalo is the Chief Risk Officer at Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. Musa has worked in public service for more than 12 years. He is a member of various committees in the public sector driving the programming of prudent risk management standards and practice notes. Musa was awarded runner-up Risk Manager of the Year by the Institute of Risk Management South Africa in 2016. He has been in involved in various leadership roles concerning youth empowerment and is currently involved in the fight against drug addiction among youth.
