Vandalism Statement

Howard University has received media requests regarding the condition of the Blackburn Center, which is the campus facility inhabited by a group of protesting students.

Although administrators visit daily repeatedly attempt to meet with students in the building over the course of their protest, administrators have not been able to consistently enter the Blackburn Center and thoroughly examine the building. However, it appears at least three acts of vandalism occurred in the student center during the first week of November.

Campus police were called to the Blackburn Center on Tuesday, 11/2, to investigate a suspicious incident. The responding officer walked through the area and found the rear door to the kitchen had been damaged. Staff repaired the door and secured it for the evening.

Then during the overnight hours of Wednesday, 11/3, staff discovered the glass door to the Recreation Room in the basement of the Blackburn Center was broken. Maintenance crews were notified.

The long standing statute outside the Blackburn Center has also been defaced with graffiti.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents should contact Howard University Department of Public Safety at 202-806-1100.
